Navigating the Holidays
The holidays are such a magical time - filled with twinkling lights, family gatherings and endless plates of cookies and treats! It is one of my favourite times of year and experiencing it through the eyes of a child has made it even more magical. It is a time filled with joy and connection but it’s also a time for many families routines fly out the window.
As a mom and sleep consultant, I get it. You are often busy trying to cram in events and family visits leading to more on the go naps and late nights than you would typically experience. Does that mean achieving good sleep during the holidays is a lost cause? Not at all! With some flexibility and planning you can still make the most of the holiday season while making sure your little ones are getting the rest they need.
Prioritize a Flexible Routine : During the holidays, it’s okay to relax a little on your schedule. Instead focus on maintaining consistency where you can round wake times, naps and bedtime routines. For example if you are getting home late from a family dinner focus on maintaining familiar cues like a bedtime story or song. Small anchors like this will help let your little one know it is time for sleep even if you can’t get through your regular bedtime routine. Napping at a family member’s house? Find a dark room to set up their pack and play with a portable sound machine for nap time. If your holiday plans include longer travel, see if you can time it during nap time for an on the go nap.
Set Realistic Expectations : The holidays are full of unpredictable moments and not every nap or bedtime will go perfectly. That’s okay! The holidays are so exciting for everyone and can be full of big days for your little one. If bedtime gets delayed or a nap gets skipped, remind yourself it is just one day. Focus on resetting the next day by prioritizing rest and sticking to their usual schedule as much as possible.
Be Kind to Yourself: The holidays are meant to magical and fun, and with that may come a little bit of chaos. If sleep doesn’t go as perfectly as planned, remind yourself that is okay. You are making magical memories with your child, and sleep can always get back on track.By staying flexible and focusing on what matters most, you can navigate the holiday season with joy and a little rest too.
