Creating The Ideal Sleep Environment
Sleep environment is something that can greatly impact your little one’s sleep. It’s also really easy to make changes to create a sleep environment that better supports your child’s sleep. Wondering what the “must haves” for your little one’s sleep environment? Here are my top 5 picks when it comes to setting up your baby’s room!
Darkness - You are going to want the room as dark as possible. The ideal level of darkness, is to be unable to clearly see your hand in front of your face. You can achieve this using blackout blinds or curtains, window attachments (ex. EZ Blackout) or other window coverings.
Sound Machine - These are perfect for helping to drown out any external noise that may happen, for example, the Amazon driver is notorious for dropping off packages after bedtime here and our family dog loves to alert us of their arrival. It doesn’t need to be fancy and there are tons of affordable options available. The volume should be about that of a running shower.
Crib (or Bassinet) - A safe and comfortable sleeping place for your baby that follows safe sleep recommendations provided by AHS and/or AAP. Cribs/Bassinets should remain empty except for a fitted sheet until your child is 12 months or older.
Sleep Sack - Not only do I love sleep sacks because they help keep your little one warm and cozy throughout the night while following Safe Sleep Guidelines, but it also prevents pesky crib climbing.
Temperature- Babies love a sleep environment temperature of 20-22 degrees celsius. To help maintain a comfortable sleep temperature for your little one in all seasons/weather, you may need to adjust the TOG of sleep sack, pajamas and thermostat.
